<u>, <mark>, <small>, <s>, <del>, <ins>
Underline, highlight, fine print, strikethrough, deletions and insertions.
1More Inline Semantics
<mark> highlights search hits. <small> means side-comments / fine print. <del>/<ins> show edits. <s> indicates "no longer accurate".
<p>Search results for <mark>HTML</mark>.</p>
<p><small>Terms apply.</small></p>
<p>Price: <s>$99</s> $49</p>
<p>You have <del>5</del><ins>3</ins> messages.</p>2Put the element in context
Text-level elements can represent an edit, a highlighted passage, or secondary annotation. Their meaning should fit the content rather than simply reproduce a visual effect. A highlighted search match and a deleted price communicate different things even if both attract attention.
3Practice with a small page
Mark a relevant search phrase with mark and an actual revision with del and ins. Inspect the surrounding sentence for clarity. Use plain CSS when the only requirement is a decorative highlight without the semantic meaning of those elements.
